Buyers ‘very competitive’ in Kilkenny for ‘limited number’ on offer – Candler

Farming News/Mart Reports: Kilkenny Mart – Sheep Prices – 10-07-2023

According to George Candler, a smaller sale of sheep – circa 400 entries – came under the hammer at Kilkenny Mart’s sale on Monday, July 10th, 2023.

The mart’s auctioneer reported that butcher lambs sold to €193/head, while factory lambs hit €155/head and cull ewes varied from €78-€185/head.

Speaking following the sale, he commented: “A smaller entry helped create a good trade, with buyers being very competitive around the ring and online for the limited number on offer.”

“Many sheep producers have sold their early lambs with smaller numbers now appearing, which is beneficial to the limited number of farmers who have remained in the lamb business,” he remarked.

In his cattle sale report last Thursday, Candler commented that “a lot of beef farmers are seriously considering if they have a viable future”.
