George Candler: Do factories want a beef industry?

Farming News/Mart Reports: Kilkenny Mart – Cattle Prices – 06-07-2023

According to George Candler, some 650 lots crossed the scales at Kilkenny Mart’s most recent cattle sale on Thursday, July 6th, 2023, writes farming journalist, Catherina Cunnane.

He reported that cull cows were “slightly” easier, with between €1.00-€2.20/kg for Friesian types and €1.40-€2.65/kg paid out for continentals in this ring.

Meanwhile, continental store bullocks met with an “excellent” trade with prices from €2.75-€3.65/kg.

Candler commented: “These quality continentals have all derived from the suckler herd, and these types are becoming less and less common due to the fact that so many suckler farmers have left the industry due to poor returns.”

“Do factories want a beef industry? A lot of beef farmers are seriously considering if they have a viable future,” he remarked.
