Kilkenny Mart – Cattle Prices – 03-07-2023
According to George Candler, a smaller entry of some 500 lots came under the hammer at Kilkenny Mart’s sheep sale on Monday, July 3rd, 2023, writes farming journalist, Catherina Cunnane.
The mart’s auctioneer reported that “lighter and less fleshed types were more difficult to sell”.
“Butcher lambs met with a good selling trade as did factory lambs with good cover,” he added.
Butcher lambs peaked at €178/head, while factory lambs topped at €153/head and cull ewes soared to €231/head.
Factory lambs – €2.80-€3.45/kg or €110-€153/head:
- 8 45kgs – €153;
- 23 44kgs – €149;
- 15 43kgs – €147;
- 8 42kgs – €141;
- 20 41kgs – €140;
- 10 39kgs – €112.
Butcher lambs – €3.00-€3.55/kg or €148-€178/head:
- 8 59kgs – €178;
- 10 55kgs – €175;
- 5 53kgs – €165;
- 8 50kgs – €150;
- 5 48kgs – €173;
- 10 46kgs – €163.
Other categories:
- Cull ewes 80kgs plus – €130-€231/head;
- Cull ewes under 80kgs – €65-€130/head.
Last week’s sheep prices
According to George Candler, some 750 lots came under the hammer at Kilkenny Mart’s sheep sale on Monday, June 26th, 2023.
The mart’s auctioneer reported that a “good solid trade” prevailed for sheep with highs of €192/head for butcher lambs, up to €184/head for factory lambs and cast ewes to €225/head.
Speaking following the sheep sale, Candler said:
“Live exporters appear to have stopped trading at the moment as the Muslim festival Eid al Adha is over in early July.”
“Factory buyers and wholesalers were active with the trade also helped by a handful of butchers,” he remarked.

Last week’s cattle prices
According to George Candler, some 560 lots crossed the scales at Kilkenny Mart’s cattle sale on Thursday, June 29th, 2023.
The mart’s auctioneer reported that trade forward store bullocks and heifers was “quieter compared to the previous week”.
“Cull cows were also more difficult to get away, although only one in this category failed to sell.”
“Lighter store bullocks and heifers, especially quality lots, specifically continentals, showed an improvement.”
