VIDEO: April-born Sabella sells for 18,000gns

Topping the British Limousin Cattle Society’s weaned calf sale on Friday, December 10th, 2021, at 18,000gns respectively, was Sarkley Sabella.

According to the society, spirits were “high” at Borderway Mart at its final society sale of 2021.

Bred by E H Pennie and Son, Montgomery, Powys, the category-topper, is an April-2021 born heifer is by a home-bred bull, Sarkley Osprey, and is out of Sarkley Orabella, a daughter of Plumtree Fantastic.

According to the sales catalogue, Sabella has a beef value of LM40 and myostatin of Q204X/Q204X.

She was the cream of the crop for the Wilodge herd who took her home to Shifnal, Shropshire.

Limousin weaned calf sale 

On her heels at 7,000gns from Woodmarsh Sovereign, from M and J C Gould, Bomere Heath, Shrewsbury, who now heads to Omagh with L Robb.

The January-2021-born heifer is by Wilodge Cerberus and Wilodge Naturelle and carries myostatin of F94L and Q204X.

Next up at 6,800gns was Lowgate Snowflake, brought forward by Ian Brown, Spalding, Lincolnshire.

Snowflake is a February-2021-born heifer by Ampertaine Elgin and out of the home-bred cow, Lowgate Nellie.

According to the catalogue, Snowflake carries two copies of the Q204X/Q204X myostatin gene. P J Holt and Sons were the successful purchasers, taking her home to Thornton On Cleveleys, Lancashire.

Other Limousin cattle prices 

Goldies Sarah from B T Goldies, Mouswald, Dumfries was next in the price table at 6,500gns. This March-2021-born Carrickmore Maximus heifer is out of Goldies Oriana.

According to the catalogue, Sarah carries myostatin of Q204X and NT821 and a beef value of LM28. Messrs Little of the Guards herd, Wigton, Carlisle was the winning bidder here.

The highest-priced bull calf was Ritchies Seryl from A Ritchie, Whitecairns, Aberdeenshire.

Seryl is a January-2021-born bull calf by Ampertaine Elgin and out of Emslies Leryl, the herd’s foundation cow.

The catalogue states that Seryl has a beef value of LM30 and carries myostatin traits of NT821 and Q204X.

He had what the society described as a “successful” show season, winning reserve junior male at Stars of the Future and his bull calf class in the weaned calf show. G, H and C Davies, Felinfach, Brecon, Powys now own him.

At 4,200gns was Sarkley Sally from E H Pennie and Son, Montgomery, Powys.

Sally, an April-2021-born heifer, is by Sarkley Osprey and out of a home-bred cow, Sarkley Nalani.

According to the catalogue, she carries a beef value of LM42; this heifer also carries myostatin traits of F94L and NT821. Sally now calls Maybole home with M and F Burns of the Shaws herd.

NI breeders 

Chris Johnston, Fivemiletown, Co Tyrone took home 4,000gns after parting ways with Johnstown Sumo.

The March-2021-born bull calf is by Trueman Idol and out of Ashmara Classygirl.

Sumo carries myostatin of NT821 and Q204X and goes home to Keswick, Cumbria, with T Trafford.

Thomas Clancy, Dungannon, Co Tyrone put Collegeland Sara under the hammer at the same price tag.

Sara is a January-2021-born Plumtree Fantastic daughter out of a home-bred cow, Collegeland Molly. Sara carries myostatin of F94L and Q204X and goes home with Christin Cormack, Jedburgh Roxburghshire.

Clive Knox, Hume, Kelso secured 3,500gns for Beachmount Sammy. Sammy is a March-2021-born Rogans Poseidon bull calf out of a home-bred cow, Beachmount Odessa.

Sammy carries a myostatin of double F94L and a beef value of LM27.

The entry caught the eyes of D C and KL Hutchinson, and T W Hutchinson, who purchased him in shares and took him home to Barnard Castle.

Lastly, at 3,500gns was Sarkley Sasha from E H Pennie and Son.

Sasha, the May-2021-born Trueman Idol daughter, is out of a home-bred cow, Sarkley Isadora.

Sasha carries two copies of the Q204X myostatin and was purchased by A and J A Iveson, Hawes of the Eastshaw herd.
