Clew Bay Rosan tops Elphin Limousin sale at €3,200

12 out of 19 heifers forward sold to an average of just under €2,500 at the second annual North West Limousin Club’s female sale at Elphin Mart on Monday, December 6th, 2021.

Topping the price table at €3,200 was Padraic Golden’s February-2020 born 540kg, Clew Bay Rosan.

The Carrowholly, Westport, Co Mayo breeder’s heifer is by Neuf and is out of a home-bred dam, Clew Bay Laoise.

According to the sale catalogue, Laoise’s dam, an Ampertaine Foreman daughter, was a “red rosette” winner in Tullamore.

The sale topper – which the breeder described as a “super heifer” in the catalogue – also has Goldies Terence and Wilodge Cerberus in her sire stack.

As reported by That’s Farming, last year, the Westport breeder topped the Irish Limousin Cattle Society’s final sale of 2020 with Clew Bay Panda.

Meanwhile, hot on Rosan’s heels at this sale at €3,000 was Liverpool Rihanna, from Kevin Graham, Keadue Boyle, Co. Roscommon.

The 570kg April-2020-born Ronick Hawk daughter is out of Liverpool Felicity, which according to the breeder, has bred bulls to €4,000.

The sale catalogue stated that she is a “stylish heifer with a regular cycle” that is an F941(myostatin) and NT821 carrier.

Limousin sale

The next best at €2,900 was Donie McKeon’s Milan Peighton. The Carrowcarden, Enniscrone, Co Sligo native featured on That’s Farming earlier this year. He explained his herd’s link with a 50,000gns Limousin bull.

Milan Peighton, born in December-2019, is by Gamin, and out of Milan Jolie, an Ampertaine Foreman daughter; she was sold served.

Boyle, Co Roscommon man, Kevin Graham, returned to the sales ring at Elphin with Liverpool Rachel. This Tomschoice Lexicon daughter, out of Liverpool Jacqui with Haltcliffee Dancer and Sympa blood, found a new home at €2,800.

In the sales catalogue, Graham pointed to the heifer’s other bloodlines, including Lexicon, Dancer and Ideal 23 and declared that she carries two copies of the F94L gene (myostatin).

In a statement following the sale, a spokesperson for the club said:

“The brisk on-farm trade for Limousin females resulted in some choice lots being sold before the sale and reduced the numbers forward at the auction. Tom Cox was the auctioneer.”

“The North West Club would like to thank all that bid for and bought at the sale and also thank Elphin Mart for their help on the night,” the spokesperson concluded.
