Last week’s cattle prices

According to George Candler, the sale of 950 lots generated a turnover in excess of €1.1 million at Kilkenny Mart on Thursday, June 23rd, 2022.

The mart’s auctioneer reported that prices reached €2,600 in the bullock ring, while heifers reached €1,900 at its most recent cattle sale.

He acknowledged a “definite reduction” for plain types with some Friesian bullocks back €20-€40/head as they ranged from €2.10-€2.30/kg.

He noted that: “On the plus side, beef type Friesians ranged from €2.40 to €2.65 per kilo.”

“The lack of rain which has restricted grass growth in this part of the country is another factor that is slowing the trade.”

“Quality beef type bullocks ranged from €2.65 to €3.47 per kilo with beef heifers ranging from €2.40 to €3.05 per kilo.”

“The top call for store bullocks at the sale was for 3 Charolais, weighing 315 kilo, at €1160 or €3.68/kg. So even allowing for the reduction in some classes, it was not all doom and gloom,” Candler concluded.
