Talking Trade: Mart managers report uplifting start to autumn weanling sales

In this week’s edition of Talking Trade on That’s Farming, Catherina Cunnane, takes a look at mart reports that we have featured this week.

Aurivo Balla Mart

A Belgian Blue-cross heifer skyrocketed to a top call of €3,500 at Aurivo Balla Mart’s opening weanling show and sale on Tuesday, September 5th, 2023.

Headlining the sale at the Mayo-based venue was 8-month-old lot 879, which has garnered notable pre-sale interest on social media.

She was born on January 9th, 2023, crossed the scales at 460kgs and went under Brendan Corrigan’s hammer for €3,500 or €7.61/kg.

The sale-topper, which was bred and sold by Patrick Gallagher, Enniscrone, Co Sligo, is out of the AI Belgian Blue bull, Delure – BB4498 (Progressive Genetics’ sire) and a Limousin-cross-Belgian Blue-dam (KJB x JOK).

She came first in her class, number 6 – sponsored by Harrington’s Concrete and Quarries in Kilkelly, Co Mayo, in the pre-sale show, which was judged by a County Sligo-based exporter, Ciaran Burke, before the sale got underway across two rings – bull weanlings in ring one and heifer weanlings in ring two.

Castlerea Mart

According to Brendan Egan, some 500 lots came under the hammer at Castlerea Mart on Thursday, September 7th, 2023.

Bullocks made up to €2,000, heifers topped out at €2,140, while dry cows climbed up to €2,180.

Egan reported that “with better weather conditions and improved grass growth. trade was improved all around with stock presented looking better ad customers more anxious for stock”.

“The weanling trade continues to be very lively at the moment with strong export demand as well as farmers and feeders,” he added.

Dowra Mart

According to a spokesperson for Dowra Mart, just over 400 lots changed hands at its most recent cattle sale on Saturday, September 2nd, 2023.

The spokesperson reported that “trade remained strong for all classes of cattle, especially quality lots in both rings”.

At Saturday’s sale, cull cows pushed up to €2360 for a CHX weighing 890kg, while a 1015kg bullock climbed to €2600.

In the weanling rings, a BBX bull weighing 365kg sold for €1480 and a CHX heifer weighing 600kg topped at €1880, while a 2017 born CHX cow with a CHX bull calf found a new owner at €2130.

Ennis Mart

According to a spokesperson for Ennis Mart, some 450 lots crossed the scales at Tuesday’s general cattle sale.

A small entry of suckling stock and pairs made to €2,210 and in-calf lots topped at €2,470.

A spokesperson for the mart said: “There were great bull weanlings on offer, and these were a great trade with shippers and online activity very strong.”

“Heifers also attracted some shipping activity and this, together with farmer customers, ensured a very strong trade,” the spokesperson added.

They reported that bulls in the 300kg to 400kg averaged €3.15/kg and over 400kg levelled at €2.92/kg. Meanwhile, heifers in the 300kg to 400kg sold for an average of €2.88/kg, while those north of 400kg sold for €2.81/kg of an average.

Kilrush Mart

Wednesday, September 6th, 2023, saw over 450 lots cross the scales at Kilrush Mart’s annual show and sale.

According to a spokesperson for the mart, the sale attracted mainly forward types and some light stores, with a blend of continental and traditional breeds on  offer.

They noted that “there was great stock on offer and a great trade to match”.

At the sale, bullocks led at €2,480, while heifers hit €1,930 and cows soared to €1,870.

Headford Mart

A spokesperson for Headford Co-operative Livestock Mart reported a “cracker of a sale for all cattle across the board” on Saturday, September 2nd, 2023, writes farming journalist, Catherina Cunnane.

They noted that there was an increased number on offer in comparison to the previous week.

In the bullock ring, prices topped at €2,520, while cull cows pushed up to €1,780 and heifers made up to €2,170.

Tuam Mart

According to Marion Devane, Tuam Co-operative Livestock Mart saw “a fine cattle trade all around” on Monday, September 4th, 2023.

At its most recent general cattle sale, dry cows topped out at €2,380, while heifers pushed up to highs of €1,940 and bullocks topped at €2,400.
