Farming News/Mart Reports on That’s Farming – Aurivo Balla Mart – Cattle Prices – September Weanling Show and Sale

In the first of a two-part article series, That’s Farming editor, Catherina Cunnane, reports from the weanling bull ring at Aurivo Balla Mart’s opening weanling show and sale of 2023, which saw prices top at €3,500, as reported by us in this news article.

A blazing trade prevailed for bull and heifer weanlings across the board at Aurivo Balla Mart’s opening weanling show and sale on Tuesday, September 5th, 2023.

According to the manager of Balla Mart and manager of Aurivo Marts some 500 bulls and 200 heifers came under the hammer.

He reported that “there were some excellent prices paid and trade was lively with plenty of customers from all over Ireland including exporters, farmers and online purchasers”.

“Based on today, I am confident that weanlings will be a good trade going forward.”

“Some said they have ‘never seen the likes of it before’ with regard to prices and the quality of the weanlings on offer.”

“In cases, we saw farmers trying to outbid northern online buyers. There was a full house with a lot of farmers interested in viewing the show and sale.”

Bull weanling prices
Bull weanlings 200kg to 350kg averaged €3.33/kg, while those in the 350kg to 450kg weight bracket levelled at €3.38/kg and entries north of 450kg+ sold for €3.34/kg, of an average.

One CHX bull weighing 345kg sold by a farmer from Kilsallagh – Westport made €1,480 or €4.29/kg and was bought by a Foxford farmer. There was a 380kg entry sold by a Newbrook – Claremorris farmer for €1,650 or 4.34/kg that went for export.

Meanwhile, a BBX bull weighing 475kg sold by a Carrownedan – Aughamore farmer was snapped up for €2,750 or €5.78/kg by an exporter.

Finally, a LMX, 530kg bull, went under the hammer for €2,160 or €4.08/kg and went to a northern buyer from Co Tyrone.
