Cull cows to €2,320 and bullocks to €2,200 at Carnew

Carnew Mart – 26-03-2022

According to David Quinn, just under 1,300 lots came under the hammer at Carnew Mart on Saturday, March 26th, 2022.

The mart manager reported that some 550 calves also passed through the ring, while Friday night’s sale attracted in excess of 400 cull cows.

He reported that once again, cows were “a very strong” trade with prices to €2,320, for a Simmental-cross, 880kgs.

Quinn said: “While all stock remained a very lively trade, the beef cows have moved onto to get dearer.”

“Store cows are a very lively trade with buyers heading to grass,” he added.

Meanwhile, prices “moved up a gear” at Saturday’s sale, which drew “a very big” entry.

In the bullock ring, entries reached €2,200, while a 600kg Belgian Blue-cross heifer changed for €1840.

He noted that store cattle were “also on fire” as with grass appearing, buyers are “more anxious” to secure cattle.

Meanwhile, bulls were in “strong” supply, with many making €3.00/kg, while Quinn noted that calves were a “much tougher” trade throughout.
