‘The forward heavier lots have noticed price adjustment in line with beef prices’ – Egan

Castlerea Mart – Cattle Prices – 22-06-2023

According to Brendan Egan, a large entry presented for sale at Castlerea Mart’s general cattle sale on Thursday, June 22nd, 2023, writes farming journalist, Catherina Cunnane.

The mart manager reported that lighter store quality remained an “excellent” trade with a “good” attendance of customers present.

He commented: “The forward heavier lots have noticed price adjustment in line with beef prices, but demand remained strong for quality lots.”

“The dry cow with more store lots on offer this week noticed a good clearance.”

“The weanling rings witnessed heifer weanlings make up to €4.16/kg, while bulls topped out at €3.53/kg.”

Cows with calves at foot made up to €2440, while the calf ring, with slightly bigger numbers on offer, reported an “excellent” clearance.

Dairy-cross calves made from €10 – €50, while Aberdeen Angus crosses and Hereford-crosses pushed from €150 – €340.

  • Runners fetched from €180 to €850 for continental lots.

Weanling heifer prices:

  • LM – 260KGS – €900;

  • LM – 300KGS – €1250;

Previous week’s cattle sale

According to Brendan Egan, some 300 lots went under the hammer at Castlerea Mart on Thursday, June 15th, 2023.

The mart manager reported that trade is “holding well”, especially for quality stores.

Bullocks topped out at €2090, while heifers peaked at €2200, and dry cows led the charge at Thursday’s sale at €2460.

The weanling rings, with smaller numbers on offer, witnessed “excellent” demand and a “good” clearance.

Cows with calves at foot changed hands for up to €2,420, while the calf ring reported a “good” trade with fewer numbers on offer.
