When a vet from South Texas Large Animal Mobile Veterinary Services, PLLC, tended to a cow earlier this week, they initially thought they were being presented with a possible uterine prolapse.
However, upon closer examination, the vet made a startling discovery. “I knew it was not a prolapse, but rather a tumour hanging out of her back end. There was also a foot visible from the calf.”
“I tried letting her drift down a fence slowly but before we got her roped, the tumour ‘fell off’. We got her restrained and delivered a live heifer calf that was almost the same size as this mass!”
“I believe this was a cervical leiomyoma, but we didn’t send off any samples.” the vet explained.
The vet estimated that the tumour, which “filled the bottom of a molasses tub”, weighed just over 22kgs. “Talk about being cramped in your crib! Momma and baby are doing good.”
