Farming News/ Mart Reports: Castlerea Mart – Cattle Prices – 27-07-2023

According to Brendan Egan, slightly larger numbers of stock came under the hammer at Castlerea Mart on Thursday, July 27th, 2023, writes farming journalist, Catherina Cunnane.

The bullock ring witnessed top-quality lighter stores make up to €4.0/kg, while heavier lots sold to €1890.

The heifer rings saw prices peak at €1910, with stores similar in price to last week, while dry cows topped out at €2090.

The calf ring, with numbers maintained, reported a “good” clearance.

Egan commented: “Despite falling beef prices and no improvement in weather conditions, trade held up extremely well, especially for quality stores.”

“At Thursday’s sale, cows with calves at foot made up to €2450, while the weanling rings saw bulls peak at €3.62 a kilo with “good demand” for quality lots,” Egan added.

  • Cows with calves at foot pushed from €1260 to €2450 for a 5-year-old cow and her Limousin heifers calf at foot.

Dairy prices

A dairy dispersal Sale on Tuesday, July 25th, 2023, in association with Taaffe Auctions saw 66 lots presented for sale on the day with cows making up to €2560 and a 100% clearance.

According to Egan, “demand was excellent on the day with lots finding homes in different provinces”, and the Aberdeen Angus stock bull made €1700.
