Ballinrobe’s special continental bullock sale sees highs of €2,090

Weanling bulls hit a high of €4.14 per kg, while weanling heifers peaked at €3.84 per kg at Aurivo Ballinrobe Mart, Co Mayo, on Monday, September 25^th, 2023, according to Teresa Gibsey.

The mart’s assistant manager reported that the average for weanling bulls on the day was €3.42/kg, while heifers levelled at €2.90/kg.

Sample weanling bull prices on the day as follows: 

• CHX – 390KG – €1,380 – €3.54/KG;
• CHX – 350KG – €1,270 – €3.63/KG;
• CHX – 335KG – €1,300 – €3.88/KG;
• CHX – 285KG – €1,180 – €4.14/KG;
• LMX – 175KG – €650 – €3.71/KG.

Weanling heifer prices:

• CHX – 360KG – €870 – €2.42/KG;
• CHX – 310KG – €1,050 – €3.39/KG;
• CHX – 250KG – €960 – €3.84/KG;
• CHX – 290KG – €1,010 – €3.48/KG;
• LMX – 175KG – €650 – €3.71/KG;
• CHX – 280KG – €970 – €3.46/KG.

Cattle sale

The mart’s special continental bullock sale, which was held in conjunction with its general weekly cattle sale, on Wednesday, September 27^th, 2023, was met with “huge” demand with entries reaching €3.45/kg or €2,090 per head.

Bullock prices varied from €670 to €2,090 per head or €1.52 to €3.45 per kg.

The average for bullocks 500kg plus was €2.78/kg, while lighter bullocks 400 to 500 kgs had an average of €2.76/kg, which, according to Gibsey, represented an increase of approximately 20 cent/kg on returns from 2022.

Heifers were also in “good” demand on the day with prices ranging from €680 to €1,750 per head or €2.00 to €3.37 per kg.

Heifers 500kg plus levelled at €2.56/kg, while entries in 400kg to 500kg weight bracket sold for €2.68/kg of an average.

Bullock prices:

• CHX – 715KG – €2,090 – €2.92/KG;
• CHX – 640KG – €1,990 – €3.11/KG;
• CHX – 475KG – €1,610 – €3.39/KG;
• LMX – 370KG – €1,190 – €3.22/KG;
• CHX – 475KG – €1,640 – €3.45/KG.

Heifer prices:

• CHX – 565KG – €1,750 – €3.10/KG;
• CHX – 525KG – €1,620 – €3.09/KG;
• LMX – 475KG – €1,600 – €3.37/KG;
• CHX – 445KG – €1,230 – €3.70/KG;
• LMX – 365KG – 1,080 – €2.96/KG.

Dry cows:

On Wednesday, the average for dry cows was €1,155 per head. Cow prices ranged from €570 to €1,950 with the top call clinched by a Limousin-cross entry from Donniver, Achill, which weighed 840kg and made €2.32/kg.
