Kilkenny Mart – Cattle Prices – 21-03-2022

According to George Candler, some 350 lots came under the hammer at Kilkenny Mart’s sheep sale on Monday, March 21st, 2022.

The mart’s auctioneer reported a “very lively” sale for all entries, with a “sharper trade all-round” compared to the previous week.

He noted that there was “plenty of interest” from wholesale and factory buyers at this week’s sale.

Butcher lambs – €3.10-€3.33/kg or €155-€181/head:

• 13 57kgs – €180;
• 10 56kgs – €181;
• 8 55kgs – €175;
• 14 54kgs – €180;
• 10 51kgs – €158;
• 23 50kgs – €158.

Factory lambs – €3.00-€3.57/kg or €135-€172/head:

• 10 spring lambs – 49kgs – €172;
• 5 45kgs – €164;
• 8 45kgs – €140;
• 8 44kgs – €152;
• 10 43kgs – €139;
• 8 42kgs – €137.

Store lambs – €3.50-€3.76/kg or €120-€140/head:

• 15 49kgs – €140;
• 15 38kgs – €137;
• 15 37kgs – €139.

Dairy cattle

Meanwhile, Candler reported that the dairy sale saw “a bit more of a sluggish trade” due to the large numbers on offer (over 110 head). He also pointed out that buyers appeared to be more selective.

He added that freshly-calved Friesian heifers pushed from €1,200-€1,800/head, while freshly calved Friesian cows made from €1,000 to €2,020/head.

Last week’s sheep sale

According to George Candler, some 300 lots passed through the ring at Kilkenny Mart’s sheep sale on Monday, March 14^th, 2022.

The mart’s auctioneer reported that all sheep met with a “lively” trade with lambs/hoggets to €166/head and cull ewes to €200.

He explained that this led to a full clearance.

• Butcher lambs – €2.75-€3.28/kg or €158-€166/head;
• Factory lambs – €3.00-€3.70/kg or €140-159/head;
• Cast ewes – €60-€200/head.
