22c/kg reward scheme for Beef Shorthorn bull’s progeny

Renowned Beef Shorthorn breeder, Tommy Staunton of the Caramba herd, has launched a new 5-star reward scheme for Caramba Leyenda Del Norte’s (SH4725) progeny.

The Kinvara, County Galway farmer, is offering a 22c/kg market day premium on every Del Norte-sired bull or heifer calf sold back to his herd to supply Rooster’s Farm Shop.

Rooster’s Farm Shop, farmer-owned and locally sourced, aims to “provide and champion high-quality, local produce served with warmth and care”.

It stocks “some of Ireland’s tastiest and most sustainable food and drink”, including its own home-reared grass-fed Caramba Beef Shorthorn meat, seasonal lamb and pork produced on its farm.

The family-run business currently has beef maturing, that of Del Norte’s progeny, and it will be available from Thursday, April 29th, 2021 (tomorrow).

‘It is not just about growing a pound of meat’

Speaking to That’s Farming, Staunton said:

“The scheme is only for my SH4725 bull’s progeny. I believe his genetics have very good marbling qualities and are easy fleshing. For me, it is not just about growing a pound of meat, but about growing meat that tastes great.”

“The Shorthorn beef has, for a long time, been noted for its eating qualities. By purchasing back the weanlings at 280kg to 320kg, it allows me sufficient time to finish to our criteria.”

“Also, it allows us to manage the timeframe for when the animal will be processed to beef,” he added.

The scheme applies to non-pedigree and pedigree animals weighing between 280kg and 320kg on the day of purchase.
