All roads will lead to Carrick-on-Shannon this Saturday, August 20th, 2022, for the annual Blue Texel society premier show and sale.
According to a spokesperson, 131 lots are included in a catalogue “full of quality” for commercial farmers and pedigree breeders alike.
A spokesperson told That’s Farming editor, Catherina Cunnane:
“There is an excellent entry of shearling rams, ram lambs/shearling ewes and ewe lambs of both the Blue Texel and Dassenkop breeds.
“Entries include a number of national champions from the Blue Texel/Dassenkop All-Ireland championships in Athlone show earlier in the summer.”
“Both breeds have experienced strong expansion over the past two years, with breeder numbers now over 100. Moreover, breeders have reported that demand for rams and females is excellent.”
“Irish commercial farmers are finding the traits of easy lambing, fast finishing, excellent kill-out percentages and grades as big attractions to the breed.”
“You buy a Blue Texel or Dassenkop ram to produce high numbers of easily born hardy lambs with low birth weights that lamb on time, with a high level of consistency in the group of lambs.”
“Live lambs, consistent quality and low vet bills are what these breeds are about,” the spokesperson added.
Vouchers and young handler classes
As an added incentive, buyers of all rams which sell for €750 or more will receive a €100 voucher.
The Blue Texel and Dassenkop breeds have a “large” following of young breeders and handlers, and as part of the society’s efforts to encourage these young handlers, it will hold a young handlers’ class.
Any young person over 8 and under 16 can exhibit a lamb on Saturday morning. According to the spokesperson, breeders at the sale will supply lambs, and all entrants will receive a Blue Texel-branded cap.
