Videos: Prize-winning weanling heifers soar to €2,600 in Castlerea

That’s Farming editor, Catherina Cunnane, attended Castlerea Co-operative Livestock Mart’s weanling show and sale (LM and CH) on Thursday, September 21^st, 2023.

Prize-winning weanling heifers reached highs of €2,600 at Castlerea Co-operative Livestock Mart’s weanling show and sale (LM and CH) on Thursday, September 21^st, 2023.

Headlining the sale was a 02-01-2023-born Elite Icecream daughter, out of a Fiston-sired dam, which crossed the scales at 465kgs, equating to €5.59/kg.

She stood first in her class, best Limousin weanling heifer, before she was chosen as overall weanling heifer champion by pre-sale judge, Cian McGloin.

Second in the same class was a 370kg 09-01-2023 born entry, out of a Limousin-cross dam, which changed hands for €1,300 or €3.51/kg.

The yellow rosette winner in this class came in the form of a 02-01-2023-born entry out of a Belgian Blue-cross dam. She crossed the scales at 390kgs and sold for €1,260 or €3.23/kg.

The red ticket winner in the best Charolais weanling heifer class fetched €1,720 or €4.14/kg. She was born on 20-01-2023 to a Blonde d’Aquitaine-cross dam and weighed in at 420kgs.

At the same money was the second prize-winner in this class. She pocketed a higher price per kg of €4.30/kg, having been born to a Shorthorn-cross dam on 20-02-2023 and weighing in at 400kgs yesterday.

The third prize winner in this class, was a 420kg entry, out of a Belgian Blue-cross dam, and born on 12-01-2023, which saw a hammer price of €1,840 or €4.38/kg.
