That’s Farming editor, Catherina Cunnane, attended Castlerea Co-operative Livestock Mart’s weanling show and sale (LM and CH) on Thursday, September 21st, 2023.

Prize-winning weanling bulls reached highs of €1,960 at Castlerea Co-operative Livestock Mart’s weanling show and sale (LM and CH) on Thursday, September 21st, 2023.

The Charolais-cross (DOB – 03-01-2023), which crossed the scales at 470kgs (€4.17/kg), is bred out of Progressive Genetics’ popular AI Charolais bull, Cloonaradoon Ricky, himself a Fiston x Cavelands Fenian son, and a Charolais-cross dam.

He snapped up the red rosette in the Charolais weanling bull class before pre-sale judge, Cian McGloin, tapped him out as the overall weanling bull champion of the day.

The second prize-winner in this class was a 340kg 27-04-2023-born entry out of a Limousin-cross dam, which sold for €1,780 or €5.24/kg, the highest price per kg recorded among weanling bull prize-winners.

Meanwhile, the yellow rosette winner in this category was a 27-01-2023-born entry out of a Charolais-cross dam, which clinched €1,700 or €4.25/kg, having weighed 400kgs.

Next, it was the turn of the Limousin weanling bulls, and the red ticket winner here was a 320kg entry out of a Belgian Blue-cross dam.

Born on 24-03-2023, he fetched €1,530 or €4.78/kg at Thursday’s sale.

Meanwhile, slightly behind on the price table at €1,500 was the second prize-winner, bred out of a Belgian Blue-cross dam also.

He was born on 16-01-2023 and weighed in at 420kgs, which equates to €3.57/kg.

Lastly, in this class, the yellow rosette recipient was bred out of a Charolais-cross dam, DOB – 09-01-2023, weighed in at 380kgs and went under the hammer for €1,430 or €3.76/kg.
