Castlerea: Demand for this year’s weanlings ‘remains strong’ – Egan

According to Brendan Egan, over 500 lots crossed the scales at Castlerea Mart on Thursday, August 31^st, 2023, writes farming journalist, Catherina Cunnane.

The mart manager reported that “August finished on a bright note with good demand and a lively trade for all classes on offer”.

Bullocks topped out at €2,050, heifers hit €1,800, while dry cows reached €2,390.

Egan commented that “demand for this year’s weanlings remains very strong with bulls hitting €4.37/kg, while heifers hit €3.00/kg”.

“Meanwhile, cows with calves at foot made up to €1880, while the runner section witnessed increased numbers with an excellent clearance,” Egan added.
