West Region Texel Club to kick off ram sales this Friday

The West Region Texel Club will commence its ram sales this season this week with its premier show and sale this Friday, August 25th, 2023, at Roscommon Mart. 

The regional club of the Irish Texel Sheep Society consists of pedigree Texel sheep breeders from Roscommon, Galway, Longford, and Westmeath.

The premier show and sale on Friday 25th will see up to 60 pedigree Texel shearling rams and ram lambs for sale. viewing and the show will be from 6 pm with the sale commencing at 7 pm sharp.

Brian Dowd, chairman of the Western Region Texel Club said:

“We are delighted to have our annual Premier Show and Sale on Friday next in Roscommon Mart.”

“A great selection of rams will be available on the evening which will include Euro-Star rams who are eligible for the Sheep Improvement Scheme (SIS).”

“We are also pleased to announce that Martin Walsh of Carnaculla Texels from Swinford, Co. Mayo will be the judge on the evening.”

At the recent national premier show and sale in Blessington, the Western Region Texel Club was well represented with Annaghdown Texels securing the top price at the sale with €13,000 for a ram lamb by the name of Annaghdown Goldfinger.

The male champion silverware went to Hill Crest Gucci at €6,500. This ram lamb was sired by Stonepark Ferrari, which was sold by a club member at last year’s premier sale.

PRO of the Western Region Texel Club, Malachy Hand, added:

“There will be further show and sales in the locality in the coming weeks in addition to the premier show and sale on Friday in Roscommon with sales in marts including, Ballinasloe, Portuma, Roscommon, Elphin, Tuam and Athenry.”

Sale dates include:
  • Tuam – Tuesday evening sale – September 5th;
  • Athenry – Friday evening sale – September 8th;
  • Elphin – Monday evening sale – September 11th;
  • Ballinasloe – Thursday evening sale – September 21st;
  • Roscommon – Saturday day sale – September 23rd;
  • Athenry – Friday evening sale – September 29th;
  • Portumna – Tuesday day sale – October 3rd;
  • Roscommon in-lamb sale – Friday evening sale – December 1st.
