Talking Trade: Autumn weanling sales see strong demand

In this week’s Talking Trade, Catherina Cunnane, takes a look at prices in marts this week.

Aurivo Balla Mart

According to Stephen Hannon of Aurivo Balla Mart, exporters, farmers, and online purchasers nationwide made their presence felt at its most recent weanling sale on Tuesday, September 26th, 2023.

The mart manager and general manager of Aurivo Marts reported that the sale attracted some 600 bulls to ring one and circa 250 heifers in ring two.

He commented that “there were some great weanlings on offer and excellent prices paid by buyers. Prices were well up on this time last year.”

Dowra Mart

According to a spokesperson for Dowra Mart, just under 800 lots crossed the scales at Saturday’s (September 23rd), cattle sale.

The spokesperson outlined that “trade remained strong for all classes of cattle, especially quality bull weanlings”.

Dry cows topped out at €2,370 for a LMX cow weighing 970kg, while heifer weanlings soared to €1,320 and heifers hit highs of €1,800.

Bullocks topped at €2,540, bull weanlings reached €1,490 and stock bulls climbed to €2,520 at Saturday’s sale.

Ennis Mart

According to a spokesperson for Ennis Mart, just shy of 1,000 lots crossed the scales at Tuesday’s (September 26th, 2023), sale.

The sale saw a larger entry of runners than previous weeks with circa 150 head in this category and highs of €1,100 for bulls and €840 for heifers.

Meanwhile, 40 suckler cows met “great” demand with pairs hitting €2,620 and in-calf lots soaring to €2,320.

The spokesperson noted that “overall, online activity was particularly strong at Tuesday’s sale”.

“Again, a super trade prevailed for bull weanlings with shippers and farmers competing strongly.”

“Also, the heifer trade improved too with some lovely quality lots available to mostly farmer buyers,” the spokesperson added.

Tuam Mart

According to Marion Devane, manager of Tuam Co-operative Livestock Mart, a “good trade all-around” prevailed at Monday’s (September 25th, 2023), general cattle sale.

Cull cows topped at €2,680, while heifers climbed to €2,070, and bullocks made up to €2,260.

Meanwhile, in the weanling ring, bulls soared to €1,320 and heifers made up to €1,230.
