Reports: What are sheep making in marts this week?

Farming News/Mart Reports: Carnew Mart – Sheep Prices – 06-07-2023

According to David Quinn, just under 1,870 head came under the hammer at Carnew Mart’s sheep sale on Thursday, July 6th, 2023.

The mart manager reported that a “very lively” trade prevailed for lambs, which saw returns up by €5/€6 per head on the previous week.

He commented: “Store lambs are starting to appear with lots of farmer demand for these.”

“Cast ewes are still on fire, reaching a height of €202 for 98kg. Breeding hogget ewes sold for up to €225,” he added.

Factory lambs:

  • 12L 46kg – €167;
  • 8L 49kg – €176;
  • 5L 45kg – €162;
  • 4L 50kg – €176;
  • 5L 55kg – €182.

Ewes:

  • 98kg – €202;
  • 78kg – €146;
  • 84kg – €160;
  • 81kg – €151.

Light ewes

  • €85-130

Stores:

  • 12L 40kg – €135;
  • 16L 43kg – €147;
  • 3L 44kg – €154;
  • 12L 43kg – €151.

Other categories:

  • Lighter stores under 35kg made from €70 to €114.
Sheep prices at Blessington Mart

Meanwhile, a spokesperson for Blessington Mart reported that trade was “a little easier for all classes” at its sheep sale on Tuesday, July 4th, 2023.

Heavy lambs met with a price increase to the tune of €5/head, while the sale attracted “a lot of buyers for store lambs”.

Heavy ewes pushed from €149 to €195/head, while lighter ewes went under the hammer at €93-€145/head.

Heavy lambs sold from €158-€164/head or €109-€118 over the kg, while factory lambs traded from €133 or €158/head or €95-€114/ over the kg and store lambs stood from €93-€128/head or €71-€94 over the kg.

Ronan Gallagher’s Summer Belles Sale

Meanwhile, in other news, sheep entries sold from €300 to €1,700 at Ronan Gallagher’s Summer Belles, which took place on MartEye, in conjunction with Mayo-Sligo Livestock Mart, Ballina.

Headlining the sale was lot number 54, a February 2022 born Texel gimmer, by the €8,500 Hillview Eloi, who was purchased at Blessington in 2021, and her dam is a full sister to Enniscrone Donovan.
