Texel tops at €1,700 at Summer Belles Sale on MartEye

Sheep entries ranged from €300 to €1,700 at Ronan Gallagher’s Summer Belles virtual timed auction, which drew to a close on Monday evening (July 3rd, 2023), on MartEye’s platform.

Headlining the sale, which the Sligo vet held in conjunction with Mayo-Sligo (Ballina) Livestock Mart, was lot number 54, a February 2022 born Texel gimmer, by the €8,500 Hillview Eloi, who was purchased at Blessington in 2021, and her dam is a full sister to Enniscrone Donovan.

On her heels, at €1,050, was lot 49, a February-2022-born Texel by Garngour Aerosmith and a Sportsman A Star daughter. Her grand-dam, 3038, was acquired from Teiglum, and she bred rams to 3.7k and ewes to 3.2k.

Two lots went under the hammer at €900, with the first being entry number 52 – a December-2022-born Suffolk ewe lamb by Crewelands Dancing Brave, and the second being lot number 63.

She is a February 2022-born Texel by the “now legendary” Strathbogie Terminator and a Stainton Coca-Cola daughter.

Lot 74 was next on the price table at €800 – this pedigree Texel ram was born in March of last year by Garngour Aerosmith, and his dam goes back to Shannah Won-O-Won.

The hammer fell at €750 on two separate occasions – the first for lot 69, a March 2022-born Texel, by Annaghdown Edoardo and a Sportsman A Star ewe. According to Gallagher, her grand-dam is a former show hogget from 2017 and is “one of the best” breeding and flushing lines in the flock.

At the same price tag was lot 79, a pedigree Texel ram, born in March of last year and by Stainton Coca-Cola and a Sportsman A Star ewe.

At €700 was lot 64, which came in the form of an April 2022-born Texel female by Enniscrone Donovan and a Garngour Aerosmith ewe. Her full sister sold for €3,300 at the sale last year, and Gallagher has high hopes for this year’s offering, which he believes “has all the class and style and is a definite contender to flush”.

At the same price was lot 70, a February 2022-born female by Garngour Aerosmith and a Sportsman A Star ewe. According to Gallagher, her grand-dam bred rams to 3.7k and ewes to 3.3k.

Lot 76, a Chartex, a March 2022-born Garngour Aerosmith son with a four-star terminal, replacement and days to slaughter rating, made the same call as did another Chartex hogget ram (lot 82) by Garngour Aerosmith, born in March of last year and carrying a four-star rating for terminal, replacement and days to slaughter fetched the same call.

Entries were snapped up by virtual purchasers from Galway, Sligo, Mayo, Donegal, Monaghan, Kerry and Clare, with three lots unsold.
