Second ‘Spring Superstars Sheep Sale’ to feature 8 breeders, 9 breeds, 66 lots

Just shy of 70 lots will come under the hammer at the second annual ‘Spring Superstars Sheep Sale’ next month, writes farming journalist, Catherina Cunnane.

The hybrid (in-person and online via LSL Auctions) multi-breed sale will take place at Ballybofey and Stranorlar Co-op Livestock Mart at 12 pm on Saturday, June 3rd, 2023.

According to organisers, approximately 66 lots ranging from ewes with lambs at foot, gimmer ewes, ram lambs, recipients with lambs at foot, commercial show lambs and semen are among those catalogued for the forthcoming sale.

Breeds that will go under the hammer include:

  • Texel;
  • Blue Texel;
  • Dutch Spotted (pedigrees, crosses, and semen – Mc Dermott’s Eminem, Diamond Fearless,);
  • Valais Blacknose;
  • Badger Face Texel;
  • Suffolk;
  • Blue Leicester;
  • Beltex;
  • Charollais;
  • Sufftex.

Breeders:

  • Martin McLaughlin – Cashel View Flock;
  • Kevin McDermott – McDermott’s Flock;
  • Michael Grant – Maghermore Flock;
  • Francis Cavanagh – Wild Alantic Flock;
  • William Tait – Calhame Flock;
  • John Doherty – Malin Head Flock;
  • Damien Doherty – Donagh Texel Flock;
  • Tyler Mc Bride – Isle of Donagh.
Spokesperson comments

Speaking to That’s Farming editor, Catherina Cunnane ahead of the sale, a spokesperson said:

“The animals on offer are from the top performing flocks in the county who have sources the top genetic bloodlines in Ireland, the UK and throughout Europe.”

“The majority of the animals in the sale are from some of the top ewe families in each individual breed and top performing sires.”

“Lambs and gimmers suitable for any show team or flush programme. We also have a small number of ram lambs that are suitable for pedigree or commercial use.”
