VIDEO: Dam of several Carrick Winter Fair champions sells for €6,000

The dam of several Carrick Winter Fair champions, including the most recent €14,500 BYU daughter at the 2022 sale, has herself sold for €6,000 at the Elite Commercial Haltered Cattle Sale at Stranorlar Mart on Saturday, May 13th, 2023.

Property of Charlestown, County Mayo-based, Chris Meehan, the cow is May-2011-born and is 100 days scanned in-calf to the AI Belgian Blue bull, BYU, carrying a bull calf.

The auctioneer remarked that “in her lifetime, she has had two C-sections, and since she had those sections, she has calved naturally three times”.

“Her last five calves in Carrick have averaged €8,000 a piece, at an average weight of 349.6kg, with a top of €10,000 and €14,500.”

“She is 100% genuine. She has left him some money, and he wants her to move on to make someone else a bit of money. The cow has done everything that can be done.”

According to Meehan, she is “one of the best breeding cows we have had the pleasure of owning”.

“Due to having a nice collection of embryos frozen, we felt now is the best time to sell.”

“This is an opportunity that does not present itself very often to buy a proven breeding,” Meehan added.

€6,000 commercial cow

The auctioneer, at Saturday’s sale, secured €2,000 as an opening bid, which was met with consistent €100 increments, followed by €200 advances.

Shortly after announcing a €100 luck’s penny at €5,200, the auctioneer declared her on the market at €5,600, at which point the hammer was set to fall before a further €200 bid, which brought the cow to €5,800.

Eventually, a final call of €6,000 from an online bidder secured the commercial cow.

€14,500 heifer

As previously reported by That’s Farming, Chris Meehan’s BYU daughter set Carrick Winter Fair 2022 on fire when she changed hands for €14,500 (€43.80/kg) in the early hours of Tuesday (November 29th, 2022) morning.

Lot 525 from the Charlestown, Co Mayo native was tapped out as the junior blue champion during Sunday’s show.

She was born in May 2022, crossed the scales at 331kgs and stood first in her class 37: Belgian Blue-cross female calf 350 kgs or under, sponsored by Eurogene AI Services.

Meehan produced the show champion – a BBX by EPI – which found a new home at €10,000 at the same event in 2019.
