Looking for a career in metal fabrication?

Cross Agricultural Engineering Ltd. is currently seeking 3 candidates to take part in their apprenticeship programme.

Full-time positions are being offered at its factory in Rathangan, Co. Kildare.

The company

Cross specialises in the design and manufacturing of farm, biogas, commercial and food processing machinery. They currently employ 40 staff in their state-of-the-art facility, which each employee designated to their own individual work bay.

The Engineering company say their staff work on individual project within the factory and are specializing in custom design, which is less monotonous than production line work, according to the company.

The program

The apprenticeship consists of 7 phases: 4 within the Cross Engineering facility and 3 in an educational facility, which will be designated in accordance with the SOLAS scheduling system.

The apprenticeship is deemed to be complete when all phases of the program are completed, which will take a minimum of 4 years from the date of registration. The apprentice will then be awarded a QQI Level 6 Advanced Certificate Craft – Metal Fabrication.

Cross state that they take pride in offering one of the best apprenticeships in the country. “If you come to train and work at Cross, there is no part of metal fabrication you will not have experience in. It is safe to say after the 4 years you will be one of the best-trained metal fabricators in the country.”

Remuneration

All apprentices will be paid the recommended wage by the Education and Training Board. A training allowance is paid by the local ETB while the apprentice is attending the off-the-job training.

Trial Period

Cross outlined that all new staff must undergo a 1-month trial period before being signed onto the training program.

According to the company, this will offer both employer and employee protection as well as offering the apprentice a taste of what their work will look like before agreeing to take part in the apprenticeship.

Requirements

  • Junior Certificate must be completed;
  • Leaving Certificate is a bonus;
  • Leaving or junior cert Engineering, Tech Drawing (DCG), Woodwork, Physics, Phys/chem are a bonus;
  • Must be 16 years of age or older;
  • No experience required (training provided);
  • Good communication skills;
  • Ability to read manufacturing drawings is a bonus;
  • Ability to work as part of a team;
  • Past engineering experience is a bonus.
