Report: ‘Strong’ farmer and exporter activity at Castlerea

Castlerea Mart – Cattle Prices – 30-03-2023

According to Brendan Egan, over 600 lots came under the hammer at Castlerea Mart’s most recent general cattle sale on Thursday, March 30^th, 2023.

The mart manager reported that farmer activity, coupled with “strong” export, resulted in a “good” clearance at Thursday’s sale.

He commented: “Despite no improvement in ground conditions, trade was very lively as an array of customers were out in force trying to source stock.”

“Weanlings, in particular, met a very lively trade with bulls topping out at €4.44/kg, while heifer weanlings made up to €4.79/kg.”

“The heifer ring witnessed quality stores making up to €4.03/kg, with heavier lots to €2170.”

Meanwhile, cull cows topped out at €2300, while breeding stock changed hands for up to €2280.

The calf ring, with “good” numbers on offer, witnessed a “good” clearance with lots to €390.

According to Egan, just over 100 bullocks passed through the ring on Monday, with a “good trade all round”.
