Sucklers to €5,000 and weanlings to €3,200 in Carnew – Quinn

Trade was “on fire” at Carnew Mart’s Annual Belgian Blue Show and Sale sponsored by the Irish Belgian Blue Cattle Society on Wednesday, September 13th, 2023, which was held in conjunction with a clearance sale of the renowned BlueStar commercial suckler herd.

According to the mart’s manager, David Quinn, “the evening surpassed all expectations with the quality of stock on offer a credit to the farmers who brought stock to the sale”.

He added that “customers from all over the country were in attendance to buy top-quality heifers and bull weanlings on offer”.

Prices on the evening topped €5,000 for sucklers, while the heifers saw the next highest call of €3200 for 396 kg for a BB or €8/kg.

Quinn added that weanling bulls on the night met with an “electric” trade with exporters, farmers and specialist feeders were “very active” with all bulls “surpassing expectations.

Prices include 534 kg making €2,240 or €4.19/kg, 538 kg making €2240 or €4.16/kg and 500 kg selling for €2000 or €4/kg.

Suckler sale

The suckler sale comprised 40 spring-calving cows, described as “all of top-quality breeding”.

The cows had spring-born calves at foot and scanned back in calf to a Limousin stock bull.

Cows climbed from €2500 to €5000 with most selling between €3000 and €3500.
Top prices on the evening:

  • BB heifer – 396 kg at €3200 or €8.08/kg;
  • BB heifer – 442 kg – €2460 or €5.57/kg;
  • BB bull – 486 kg – €1780 or 3.66/kg.

Also, an offer, three heifers 422 kg for €2416 €5.73/kg.

Quinn concluded: “On the evening, certain farmers sold lorry loads of weanlings for up to €4.50 per kilo or €1870 per head, while another farmer with 40 weanlings on offer levelled at €3.50/kg.”
