Blessington Mart Report: Cattle to €1,425 over the kg & sheep to €250/head

According to a spokesperson for Blessington Mart, Thursday, September 21st, 2023, saw a “very strong” trade for all classes, with highs of €1,425 over the kg recorded.

The spokesperson noted that the sale attracted “a lot of customers for stronger cattle in particular”.

Beef bullocks traded from €1,160 to €1,425 over the kg, while continental store bullocks pushed from €520-€1,250 over the kg, Hereford and Angus-type store bullocks clicked from €400-€860 over and Friesian store bullocks changed hands from €320-€560 over.

Meanwhile, in the heifer ring, beef types recorded prices from €1,000 to €1,260 over the weight, while continental store heifers climbed from €540 to €1,100 over and Hereford and Angus store heifers pocketed from €380-€760 over the kg.

Lastly, in the cow category, beef types pushed from €680 to €1,280 over the weight, while feeding types clinched from €200 to €540 over the kg.

This week’s sheep prices

Meanwhile, Tuesday, September 19th, 2023, saw a large entry of sheep, with a similar trade to the previous week for fat and store lambs, according to the spokesperson.

They reported that the sale saw “a lot of customers for speckled-faced ewe lambs and breeding ewes”.

Heavy ewes traded from €136-€167/head, while lighter ewes ranged from €66-€122/head.

Heavy lambs, on the other hand, climbed from €135-€141/head or €86-€95 over the kg, and factory lambs varied from €120-€135/head or €78-€88 over.

Store lambs over 40kgs climbed from €108 or €118/head or €68 to €80 over the kg and store lambs over 35kgs came in from €90 to €112/head or €55 to €76 over the kg.

Suffolk-cross hogget ewes changed hands from €150-€250/head, while Suffolk-cross 3 and 4-year-old ewes traded from €125-€170/head and Suffolk-cross ewe lambs sold from €126-€166 or €80-€132 over.

In the line of Cheviot hogget ewes, prices pushed from €150-€240/head, while Cheviot 3 and 4-year-olds stood from €125-€178/head and Cheviot ewe lambs fetched from €100 to €220/head or €60-€170 over the kg.
