Blessington: Bullocks to €1,320 over & ewes to €250/hd

Farming News/Mart Reports on That’s Farming: Blessington Mart – Cattle Prices – 31-08-2023

According to a spokesperson for Blessington Mart, a “very good” trade prevailed for both forward store and lighter store cattle on Thursday, August 31st, 2023.

Beef bullocks pushed from €1,160 to €1,320 over the kg, while continental store bullocks made from €500-€1,100 over the weight.

Meanwhile, Hereford and Angus-type store bullocks changed hands from €380-€840 over, while Friesian stores fetched from €280-€660 over the kg.

Elsewhere, in the cull cow ring, feeding types stood from €360-€550 over the kg, while beef cows traded from €560-€1,000 over the weight.

In the heifer category, continental stores traded from €460-€1,000 over the kg, while Hereford and Angus-store types made from €360-€940 over.

Sheep prices this week

Meanwhile, Tuesday, August 29th, 2023, saw large numbers on offer, with a “very good trade for all classes” reported by a spokesperson.

Heavy lambs made from €140-€150 per head or €92-€100 over the kg, while factory types ranged from €125-€140 or €86-€94 over the weight.

In the store category, those over 40kgs pushed from €108-€123/head or €65-€80 over the kg, while those over 35kgs traded from €85-€112 per head or €50-€70 over the kg and entries north of 30kgs stood €64-€85 per head or €34-58 over the kg.

Meanwhile, lighter ewes made from €74-€146/head, and heavy ewes traded from €150-€200/head.

In the line of Suffolk-crosses, ewes went under the hammer from €200-€250/head, while ewe lambs climbed from €132-€172/head or €76-€132 over the kg.

Other sheep marts

In a previous article on www.thatsfarming.com, this week, we took a look at sheep prices in livestock marts – Ennis, Dowra and Headford.

According to a spokesperson for Ennis Mart, just over 650 came under the hammers at its weekly sheep sale on Monday, August 28th, 2023.

Heavy ewes weighing 94kgs hit €196, while ewe hoggets in the breeding section maxed out at €245.

The spokesperson noted that “butcher lambs were no dearer overall with very little store lambs on offer”.

“Meanwhile, ewe prices were also back in line with factory quotes,” the spokesperson added.

Dowra Mart

Friday, August 25th, 2023, saw over 4,500 sheep cross the scales at Dowra Mart, according to a spokesperson.

Fat lambs topped out at €150 for 10 weighing 50kg, while 10 store lambs weighing 35kg sold for €110.
