Aurivo Ballinrobe Mart – Cattle Prices – 24-05-2023

“The number of cattle coming out for sale is beginning to reflect the time of year,” according to Teresa Gibsey, assistant manager at Aurivo Ballinrobe Mart.

She reported that at the mart’s most recent general cattle sale on Wednesday, May 24th, 2023, heifers peaked at €1,890, while bullocks sold to €1,450, suckler pairs maxed out at €2,420 and dry cows hit €2,100.

Heifer prices

The last of the continental heifer sale saw prices range from €1,890 or €3.88/kg.

Heifers, according to Gibsey, “stayed a moving trade” with prices ranging from €610 to €1,890 per head or €2.16 to €3.88 per kg.

The average for heifers 500kg plus was €2.90/kg, while heifers in the 400 to 500kg weight bracket levelled at €3.00/kg.

Sample prices on the day as follows:  

  • CHX – 500KG – €1,890 – €3.78/KG;
  • CHX – 615KG – €1,870 – €3.04/KG;
  • CHX – 425KG – €1,480 – €3.48/KG;
  • LMX – 470KG – €1,440 – €3.06/KG;
  • LMX – 335KG – €1,300 – €3.88/KG;
  • CHX – 275KG – €1,000 – €3.64/KG;
  • LMX – 560kgs – €1,460 – €2.61/KG;
  • LMX – 610kgs – €1,760 – €2.89/KG.

Dry cow prices

Dry cows sold from €910 to €2,100, with the best price going to a farmer from Castlegar, Galway, at €2.58/kg with an 815kg LMX, born in 2014.

  • CHX – 675kgs – €1,780 – €2.64/KG;
  • FR – 585kgs – €930 – €1.59/KG;
  • IMX – 550kgs – €1,150 – €2.00/KG;
  • SIX – 600kgs – €1,430 – €2.38/KG;
  • CHX – 695kgs – €1,640 – €2.36/KG;
  • SI – 480kgs – €1,100 – €2.29/KG;
  • FR – 595kgs – €910 – €1.53/KG.

Suckler pairs

In this suckler ring, a 5-year-old AAX cow with an AAX bull calf at foot led at €2,420, with prices from €1,420 upwards in this category.

Bullock prices

There was what Gibsey described as a “pleasant” trade for bullocks with prices reaching €1,450 or €3.66/kg.

Bullocks changed hands from €730 to €1,450 per head or €2.48 to €3.66 per kg.

The average for bullocks 500kg plus was €2.56/kg, and entries 400kg to 500kg recorded an average of €3.08/kg.

  • CHX – 280KG – €1,000 – €3.57/KG

Weanling bull prices

Weanling bulls pushed from €380 to €1,250 per head or €1.63 to €3.93 per kg at Wednesday’s sale.  The average price for weanling 200kgs to 350kgs was €2.83/kg.

  • LMX – 400KG – €1,250 – €3.13/KG;
  • LMX – 330KG – €1,100 – €3.33/KG;
  • CHX – 270KG – €1,060 – €3.93/KG;
  • LMX – 290KG – €1,050 – €3.62/KG;
  • AAX – 275KG – €900 – €3.27/KG.
