Farming News/Mart Reports on That’s Farming – Cattle Prices Aurivo Balla Mart

In the second of a two-part article series, That’s Farming editor, Catherina Cunnane, reports from the weanling heifer ring at Aurivo Balla Mart’s opening weanling show and sale of 2023, which saw prices top at €3,500, as reported by us in this news article.

A Belgian Blue-cross weanling heifer, which stood next to the supreme champion in the final judging class, provided Aurivo Balla Mart’s opening weanling show and sale with its highest call of €3,500, in a trade that saw several lots cross the €4.00-€6.00/kg price mark.

The sale-topper, which was bred and sold by Patrick Gallagher, Enniscrone, Co Sligo, is out of the AI Belgian Blue bull, Delure – BB4498 (Progressive Genetics’ sire) and a Limousin-cross-Belgian Blue-dam (KJB x JOK).

She came first in her class, number 6 – sponsored by Harrington’s Concrete and Quarries in Kilkelly, Co Mayo, in the pre-sale show, which was judged by a County Sligo-based exporter, Ciaran Burke, before the sale got underway across two rings – bull weanlings in ring one and heifer weanlings in ring two.

Averages

According to the mart’s manager, Stephen Hannon, weanling heifers from 200kg to 350 kg averaged €3.36/kg, while those between 350kg to 450kg levelled at €3.29/kg and €5.71/kg was the average price per kg for entries over 450kg.

The mart manager reported that the latter arose from some “exceptional” prices paid for show calves and breeding females.

One young BBX heifer weighing 335kg was acquired by a new Co. Kildare-based customer and made €2,030 or €6.06/kg, and she was sold by a farmer from Manulla, Castlebar.

Another heavier 465kg CHX made €2,340 or €5.03/kg and she was sold by a farmer from Creggs, Balla.
