Suckler pairs to €2,700 and cull cows to €2,670 at Balla

According to Stephen Hannon, trade for forward stores and beef types “held well” at Balla Mart at Saturday’s (June 18th, 2022) cattle sale.

The manager of Balla Mart and general manager of Aurivo Marts commented that this was “a big sale that was unprecedented for mid-June”.

Prices reached €2,340 in the bullock ring, while heifers changed hands for up to €2,070, suckler pairs topped out at €2,700 and cull cows hit €2,670.

Bullocks 300kg to 400kg averaged €2.80/kg, while bullocks 400kg to 500kg levelled at €2.68/kg and heavier bullocks 500kg + averaged €2.79/kg.

A farmer from Bushfield, Hollymount, had an AAX bullock born March-20 entry, weighing 785kg, that changed hands for €2,340.

According to Hannon, in the heifers this week. Entries up to 400 kg averaged €2.85/kg, while those in the 400kg to 500kg bracket averaged €2.72/kg and heavier heifers 500kgs+ faired out at €2.90/kg.

The category-topper in this ring came in the form of a 650kg Charolais at €2,070.
