Balla: Dry cows to €2,360 with all cattle up €141/hd on last year

According to Stephen Hannon, the average price of cattle was up by €141/head on the corresponding sale last year at Balla Mart on Saturday, September 10^th, 2022.

The mart manager and general manager of Aurivo Mart reported that prices reached €2,420 in the bullock ring, €2,000 in the heifer ring, €2,270 in the suckler ring and €2,360 in the cull cow ring.

Speaking following the sale, Hannon said:

“We held our annual bullock sale on Saturday, which attracted over 500 bullocks. There some outstanding heavy continental bullocks, in particular.”

“Trade was described as rocking or very brisk by many buyers due to the additional bidders around the ring and online.”

Cull cow prices:

In the suckler ring, a Feb-17-born LMX cow with a heifer calf changed hands for €2,270.

According to Hannon, prices in the dry cow ring were “strong”, with northern and other buyers bidding at the ringside and online.

Hannon said, “some dry cows made more than heavy bullocks at Saturday’s sale”.

Bullock prices

According to Hannon, store bullocks 400kg to 500kg averaged €2.81/kg, while heavier sorts 500kg + averaged €2.80/kg.

Hannon commented: “There were some fine bullocks and one Charolais weighing 775kg made €2,420 or €3.12/kg, while another lighter Simmental weighing 480kg made €1,880for export.”

Heifer prices

Hannon noted that heifers up to 400 kg averaged €2.69/kg, while females in the 400kg to 500kg bracket levelled at €2.74/kg and heavy heifers 500kgs+ averaged €2.78p/kg.

The category topper came in the form of a Limousin-cross weighing 655kg that made €2,000 or €3.05/kg, while another Limousin-cross, weighing 490kg, pushed up to €1,670 or €3.41/kg.
