Prices top at €5,100 at inaugural online Appelbe Production Sale

Prices soared to €5,100 at the hotly anticipated inaugural online timed Appelbe Production Sale on MartEye over the course of the weekend.

The multi-prize-winning Cork-based herd, owned by the Appelbe family, offered a consignment of genotyped Angus and polled Hereford cattle for sale from 1 pm on Friday, July 8th, to 7 pm on July 11th, 2022.

Leading the charge was lot 4, Carrigroe Super Tibbie, a November-2019-born heifer out of Fellfort Penny 1245 and due with an AA9232 son in October 2022.

She comes from the “famous” Tibbie cow family and is a “big, powerful heifer with lots of potential”.

On her heels at €5,100 was lot 6, Carrigroe P Lady Jane 1531, a February-2017-born Coolermoney Patriot P445 daughter.

Boasting a five-star rating within and across the Angus breed, she is due in mid-September to AA8232.

According to John, she is a “proven” breeder from the herd’s famous Lady Jane cow family.

She was exhibited as a heifer and bred the champion in Kilmallock at the society’s premier sale. Furthermore, two of her sons are stock bulls in pedigree herds and her maternal sister sold at an elite sale for €4,600.

The next best at €4,900 was lot 3, Carrigroe U Lady Jane 1853, a Carrigroe Real McCoy (AA8232) daughter. The May-2021-born heifer, out of Carrigroe Natasha, is a full sister to Eurogene’s AI sire, Carrigroe TikTok.

She boasts a replacement value of €206 and carries a five-star rating within the Angus breed and across all breeds.

€4,800

Lot 7, Carrigroe J Lady Heather, and her May-2022-born bull calf by Fergal found a new owner at €4,800.

The February-2012-born Loughlynn Ace female is what John described as a “proven, consistent” breeder, breeding progeny that “make high prices consistently”.

The breeder explained that Ace – with a replacement value of €183 – has produced calves that have sold for between €3,000-€5,000.

One of her daughters sold to Gigginstown for €4,750, while another daughter went on to breed an elite sales champion that changed hands for €5,700.

€3,000

At €3,000 was Carrigroe United Warrior, an Angus bull out of Carrigroe Real McCoy (sire) and Carrigroe Lady Joke (dam), born in August 2021.

According to John, the bull, which has a replacement value of €221 and has a five-star rating within and across all breeds, is a maternal sister to the €5,800 Carrigroe Pearl.

He claims the bull’s figures are “some of the highest of the Angus breed”, and he is “the ultimate stock bull for a herd”.

€2,900

Three lots changed hands for €2,900, and first up at this sum was lot 9, Carrigroe U Gold, a June-2021-born Carrigroe Real McCoy daughter. She has a replacement value of €157 and has a five-star rating within and across all breeds.

According to John, she is from the same cow family as AI bull, Carrigroe TikTok, and early lot 3, maternal sire, Ebon Hill Extra Gold, bred “great” females and was a national champion.

Lot 12, another Carrigroe Real McCoy son born in September of last year, was the next Angus entry to change hands for this sum.

Carrigroe Ukraine is a maternal brother to the 2019 All-Ireland Aldi champion from the same cow family as lot 11. John described the bull – which has a replacement value of €199 – as “correct with lots of capacity”,

Lot 13, Carrigroe U Cracker, a Real McCoy son, born in June 2021 with a replacement index of €185, a dairy-beef figure of €109 and a five-star rating within and across all breeds.

According to the Cork breeder, he is from the “famous” Lady Jane cow family and “we feel Cracker will make a great stock bull”.

In the line of polled Herefords, prices reached €2,600 for lot 15, Appel 1 Mollie, a May-2021-born heifer out of Fabb 1 Northern Star (HE4297).

According to John, she is a “very correct, feminine type heifer”, and her sire has “bred extremely well at Carrigroe, producing good females”.

Lot 14, Appel 1 Mollie, a Dernaroy 1 Impact daughter, born in September 2020 and from one of the herd’s best breeding cows, changed hands for €2,500.

Finally, lot 16 and lot 16 found new owners at €2,400, respectively. Lot 16, Appel 1 Zeus is a July-2021-born Appel 1 Star 2 son out of Appel 1 Molly 8 and lot 17, Appel 1 Ginger, is a July-2021-born Appel 1 Star 2 son out of Appel 1 Beauty 2.

Following the sale, which saw all lots reach their reserve, John Appelbe said:

“I would like to, on behalf of all here in the Carrigroe herd, wish everyone who purchased stock this evening at our production sale the very best of luck with their stock.”

“Thank you to everyone who purchased, bid and all involved, especially Jamie and Allyssha from Marteye and Martin.”

“We received great support from our friends, colleagues and the media in the promotion of the sale; everyone played a part in making it a great success,” John concluded.
