A sale not to be missed – 300 head dispersal of pedigree Holstein/Friesians in Cork

300 pedigree registered Holstein Friesians are set to come under the hammer in the forthcoming complete dispersal sale of the Clonteens herd in conjunction with Denis Barrett Auctions.

The herd – property of Jerome & Jenny O’ Sullivan, Clonteens, Lombardstown, Mallow, Co. Cork, P51HK10 – will be dispersed through means of a hybrid (on-farm and online) sale on Wednesday, December 14th, 2022, at 11 am sharp.

The sale comprises:

  • 174 Holstein/Friesian calved cows (41 first-lactation, 35 second-lactation, 17 third-lactation & eleven fourth-lactation and 70 – fifth+ calvers);
  • 62 Holstein/Friesian in-calf heifers;
  • 60 maiden heifers.

Ahead of the auction, Jerome & Jenny O’Sullivan said:

“The Clonteens Herd was founded in 1954. The stock being sold have come from some of the best stock available throughout the country at that time and were reinforced by the purchase of stock at the Moneymore/Elmgrove sale in 1964.”

“Included in this sale was Moneymore Torch 9th, who was purchased for a record price for a heifer in Ireland at that time.”

“She proved to be a wonderful buy, and many of her descendants are for sale today. Most of the stock selling can be traced back at least six generations.”

“It has been the breeding policy of the herd to develop the cow families, utilising all available breeding and management tools to breed a high producing, efficient cow which also excels on type and conformation.”

“It is with a heavy heart that I am having this dispersal sale. I am unable to continue farming, which I have enjoyed so much for nearly 50 years,” they added.

Herd performance

The herd average sits at 7,856kgs at 3.70% fat, and 3.43% protein with in excess of 561kgs combined fat and protein.

All animals are pedigree registered, milk recorded and are scanned in-calf for mainly Janurary/February 2023 to either NR (many to sexed semen) or easy-calving beef stock bulls.

Heifers are in-calf to NR stock bulls with EBIs to €324.

Dr. Dan Ryan – ReproDOC – carried out scanning and scanning certs are available.

The entire herd was TB tested in November 2022, and animals can be export tested on the evening of the auction (suitable for export direct to the UK). A full inoculation programme is in place.
