‘The sky is the limit’ for cattle prices – manager

“The sky is the limit as far as prices are concerned,” according to Seamus O’Keeffe, manager of Kanturk Mart in County Cork, which has been in operation since 1959.

He made the remark following the mart’s general cattle sale on Tuesday, January 24^th, 2023, which attracted a “huge” entry.

At the week’s sale, dry cows hit €2,060, while bullocks topped out at €1,730, and heifers soared to €1,700.

The mart manager provided the following sample prices:

Bullock prices:

• FR – 675kg – €1780;
• 4 FR – 505kg – €1170;
• 6 AA – 537kg – €1500;
• 9 FR – 486kg – €1030;
• 6 HE – 375kg – €930;
• 6 FR – 300kg – €630.

Heifer prices:

• 4 LM – 580kg – €1700;
• 7 AA – 545kg – €1540;
• 6 HE – 550kg – €1390.

Cull cow prices:

• FR – 755kg – €1580;
• LM – 755kg – €1700;
• FR – 810kg – €1760;
• CH – 770kg – €2060.

According to Michelle Hallihan, some 270 entries crossed the scales at Kanturk Mart’s cattle sale on Tuesday, January 17^th, 2023.

She reported that there was “a great trade all around with all types of cattle in great demand”.

“All cattle were making fantastic prices on what was a fine crisp winter morning.”

“Dry cows made up to €800 with their weight. Angus and Hereford bullocks sold for up to €2.85/kg & Angus & Hereford heifers peaked at €2.70/kg,” the spokesperson added.

• FR – 695kg – €1480;
• FR – 635kg – €1300;
• FR – 790kg – €1540.

Bullock prices:

• 5 HEX – 603kg – €1630;
• 10 AAX – 590kg – €1680;
• 3 AAX – 493kg – €1390;
• 2 HEX – 465kg – €1190;
• 2 HEX – 450kg – €1100;
• 2 AAX – 347kg – €990.

Heifer prices:

• AAX – 545kg – €1440;
• 4 HEX – 516kg – €1320;
• 5 LMX – 460kg – €1180;
• AAX – 305kg – €790;
• 9 AAX – 295kg – €750.

Weanling bull prices:

• 6 LMX – 300kg – €890;
• 5 AAX – 285kg – €770;
