€2,920 overall champion bullock tops Headford’s autumn show and sale

According to Joyce Whelan, interim manager at Headford Mart, prices soared to €2,920 at its autumn cattle show and sale on 17-09-2022.

Topping the price list was the overall champion, property of James Forde, Corrandulla, for his Limousin-cross bullock, which also secured a further €320 in prize money.

Other winners included lots 4A, 4B 20A for best of bullocks, lots 42D, 42E and 52 for heifers and the best pair rosette went to 52A, while the best BB offering was 6X.

Cull cow prices from €2.10-€3.52/kg:

  • FRX – 480KG – €680;
  • FRX – 430KG – €590;
  • FR – 440KG – €460;
  • SHX – 545KG – €1080;
  • LMX – 545KG – €1340;
  • LMX – 770KG – €1950;
  • LM – 710KG – €1840;

“Seán is a member of ICBF, the Irish Belgian Blue Cattle Society and the Irish Pedigree Cattle Breeders’ Council, which represents all the cattle breeders of Ireland.”

“Farmers were delighted with Sean confirming the West of Ireland features not just great quality stock in Ireland but also some of the best in Europe.”

“Quality on Saturday was fantastic and a hopeful indication of the commitment of the west to the suckler herd,” she added.

Lamb prices

Whelan reported that the best price per kg went to ewe lambs sold by an Oughterard farmer to Westmeath and the best per head price went to The Neale for ewe lambs at €170 or €3.40/kg.

Summary:

  • Texel ewe lambs: €142/40kg.
  • Lambs: €126/€3.23/kg;
  • Ewe lambs: €120/€3.00/kg;
  • Ewe lambs: €115/€3.59/kg;
  • Ewe lambs: €106/€3.07/kg.
  • Cull ewes ranged from €90 – €150.
  • 2nd and 3rd-crop ewes to €160/head;
  • Hoggets – €165 – €225/head.
