Trade opens ‘strong’ with pairs to €2,370 at Ennis

According to a spokesperson, trade opened “strong” at Ennis Mart’s first weanling and suckler sale of 2022.

Suckler entries were a “strong trade”, and pairs made to €2,370, while in-calf lots topped out at €1,910.

Following the sale, the spokesperson said: “It must be said there was some nice quality available. No suck calves available today, which is unusual.”

Last sale of 2021: Cattle prces

According to a spokesperson, just over 200 lots turned out for Ennis Mart’s final sale of 2021.

They reported that the sale drew mainly weanlings and suckler stock along with a small entry of suck calves.

A 3-week-old Charolais bull calf sold for €510, while pairs in the suckler ring hit €2,000 and in-calf lots made up to €1,590. See prices.

Sheep prices:

Meanwhile, the Clare-based mart held its opening sale of the year on Monday, January 10th, 2022. 

A spokesperson reported that just under 500 lots were on offer. 

They remarked that “trade overall similar to pre-Christmas trade and a top shout of €169 for lambs”.

“Mostly heavy lambs were available and stores were scarce. Cull ewes hit €152 and a handful of breeders in-lamb made to €170.”

  • 10 @ 54kgs – €167 – €3.09/kg;
  • 12 @ 53.5kgs – €169 – €3.16/kg;
  • 6 @ 58.5kgs – €165 – €2.82/kg;
  • 10 @ 56.5kgs – €163 – €2.88/kg;
  • 11 @ 55kgs – €162 – €2.94/kg;
  • 12 @ 49kgs – €157 – €3.20/kg; 
  • 12 @ 54kgs – €162 – €3.00/kg;
  • 6 @ 51kgs – €156 – €3.06/kg.
