Heifers to €2,810 at Balla Mart

According to Stephen Hannon, cattle changed hands for up to €2,810 at Aurivo Balla Mart on Saturday, November 27th, 2021.

In recent weeks, the Mayo-based venue has recorded some new centre record prices with in-calf heifers selling for up to €5,150, dry cows to €3,070 and heifers to €3,520.

Hannon, general manager of Aurivo Marts, and manager of Balla Mart reported that entry numbers at Saturday’s sale were up by 50% on the corresponding period in 2020.

Bullock prices:

He reported that bullocks 300kg to 400kg averaged €2.44p/kg, store bullocks 400kg to 500kg averaged €2.51/kg and heavier bullocks 500kg + averaged €2.37 /kg.

“Heavy bullocks 700kg+ were making up to €1,200 with the weight due to the presence of Northern and factory buyers. The top price in this ring was €2,040 for an April-2020-born 750kg entry.”

Heifer prices:

According to Hannon, just over 250 heifers went under the hammer in ring two, with a “better” trade than the previous week.

He said that heifers up to 400 kg averaged €2.34 /kg and those 400kg to 500kg levelled at €2.41/kg and entries 500kgs+ settled at an average of €2.49/kg.

The sale topper came in the form of a May-2020-born 595kg Belgian-Blue-cross; she sold for €2,810 or €4.72/kg.

Dry cows

Hannon added that some 130 cull cows passed through ring three, with all lots finding new owners except for one.

“Dry cow prices were up due to the presence of Northern Ireland and factory buyers. A heavy 985kg CH born in June-2015 made €2,030,” he added.

  • 450kg+ averaged 2.15/kg.
Weanling heifers:
  • 200 to 350kg averaged €2.67/kg;
  • 350 to 450kg averaged 2.32p/kg;
  • 450kg+ averaged €2.31/kg.
