Balla Mart Report: April-born heifer skyrockets to €3,150 (€6.92/kg)

Balla Mart – Cattle Prices – 18-02-2023

Prices peaked at €3,150 in the heifer ring, €2,520 in the suckler ring, €2,420 in the bullock ring and €2,660 in the cull cow ring at Aurivo Balla Mart’s general cattle sale on Saturday, February 18^th, 2023.

That is according to Stephen Hannon, manager of Balla Mart and general manager of Aurivo Marts, who reported that “prices continued to remain good for the heavier types with averages around €3.00/kg for both bullocks and heifers”.

Bullock prices

Bullocks in the 300kg to 400kg weight bracket levelled at €3.25/kg, while stores weighing between 400kg to 500kg averaged €2.98/kg, and heavier bullocks 500kg were up by 5c/kg, which led to an average of €3.11/kg.

Hannon commented: “Quality heavy bullocks 700kg+ were making €3.15 or €1,600 to €1,700 with the weight due to northern, feedlot and online buyers.”

Heifer prices

In ring two, Hannon reported that a “good” trade prevailed for most heifers, but he did note that “Saturday’s sale attracted a lot of light weanling types as farmers are cashing in early”.

Heifers up to 400 kg averaged €3.04/kg, while those in the 400kg to 500kg weight bracket levelled at €2.98/kg and heavier types that were north of 500kg averaged €2.82/kg.

Hannon reported that dry cow prices were a “good” trade, with prices to €2,660, however, he did note that the sale drew “a lot of backward types”.
