List: Balla Mart’s bi-weekly Tuesday evening weanling sales

Aurivo Balla Mart, Co. Mayo, has confirmed a raft of dates for a series of spring bi-weekly Tuesday evening weanling sales.

The first of its evening weanling sales are set to kick off later this month on Tuesday, February 28th, 2023 and will take place every fortnight thereafter.

The Mayo-based mart has issued a list of special sales that will run from February through to the end of April 2023 as follows:

  • 28-02-2023;
  • 14-03-2023;
  • 28-03-2023;
  • 11-04-2023;
  • 25-04-2023.

The above sales will take place in addition to its weekly general cattle sale of bullocks, heifers, sucklers, stock bulls and cull cows every Saturday with three rings in operation.

In a brief statement, Stephen Hannon, general manager of Aurivo Marts and manager of Balla Mart, commented:

“For the evening weanlings sales,  intake @ 4 pm, with viewing @ 5. 30 pm, and sales in both rings will get underway at 6 pm.”

“There will be no weanlings sold on the Saturdays prior to the Tuesday evening sale. Sellers should be advised to wait for the special weanling sales.”

“All stock must be penned before 5:30 pm to facilitate viewing from 5:30 pm-6:00 pm. To make bookings, contact 0818 301 401 on Thursdays,” Hannon added.

Purchased in 1990 by the North Connaught Farmers, Balla Mart is one of the country’s largest livestock marts, with the capacity to facilitate up to 1,300 cattle weekly, with an annual throughput of some 40,000 head of cattle in recent years.

We previously interviewed Stephen Hannon, who was appointed general manager of Aurivo Marts and manager of Balla Mart, Co. Mayo, in 2020.

The Sligo beef farmer joined Aurivo Marts, which operates four livestock mart centres in the west, in 2006 and became manager of Ballymote Mart and Mohill Mart in 2013,  which laid the foundations for his most recent appointments.

Before joining Aurivo, Stephen studied dairy farm management at Kildalton Agricultural College and Clonakilty Agricultural College in 1987, managed dairy enterprises and also had a stint in the beef processing industry.
