Savills is seeking €495,000 for Whitethorn Lodge and Cottage, a “picturesque” home in Midfield, Co Mayo.

In summary, this is a 3-bed house and 1-bed cottage on circa 18-acres in the “heart of the countryside”, yet it is just 6km from Swinford town.

The selling agent views the “spectacular views” of the rugged landscape of County Mayo and onto the Ox Mountains as one of the property’s “key” features.

You can approach the house “charming” country road and enter through one of two stone wall entrances, both with cast-iron gates.

The current owners constructed Whitethorn Lodge, comprising a “contemporary” home of “generous and elegant proportions”, in 2006/2007.

The bedroom accommodation is to the house’s left wing and comprises three double bedrooms, all ensuite.

A “key” feature is the number of windows throughout. The selling agent said they were “well-positioned” to take in the “excellent” countryside views and the sunroom to the side of the house benefits from morning and evening sun.

Whitethorn Lodge and Cottage

Whitethorn Cottage is to the side of the main house. It is of traditional construction with a stone exterior beneath a hip slated roof.

Continuing, the selling agent said:

“Believed to have been built in the 1800s, the cottage comprises a sitting room with a woodburning stove, a bright and spacious sunroom, kitchen space and main bedroom with ensuite.”

“This property is ideal for teenagers seeking independent space or a place that an elderly relation can downsize to.”

“The current owners have cared for both properties very well and come to the market in excellent working order.”

Outbuildings

To the property’s rear are two traditional stone stores and a 3-bay shed with a corrugated roof, corrugated walls, concrete floor, and a large sliding door with pedestrian access on both sides.

The current owners use the shed as a workshop and stabling, but the selling agent claimed it is multi-functional.

According to the selling agent, the stone granary building is in “poor” condition. However, with the “right care, could be a beautiful building with possible income-producing potential”.

Grounds

Whitethorn Cottage and Lodge sit amidst established garden grounds which are predominately laid to lawn.

To the front of the house are several flower beds, shrubs and box hedging.

Then, to both properties’ rears are a small patio area, various fruit trees, and a children’s play area. The garden boundary is separate from the agricultural holding.

Land

Finally, behind the property is about 18.7-acres of ring-fenced, well-drained grazing land.

Also, the property benefits from a half share of 22.8-acres of comanage to the house’s rear.
