VIDEO: Cows make annual swim to graze new pasture

A herd of twenty cows made their annual swim across Lough Erne for summer pasture in recent days.

The cows, owned by the National Trust NI, ventured to the island of Inishfendra on Crom Estate, where they will remain until they are due to return to the mainland for the winter.

The channel that cattle swim across is approximately 100-metres wide.

In a video, Matthew Scott, area ranger, National Trust Fermanagh, said: “Swimming cattle is like is sort of a traditional way of doing it.”

“Quite often now, people would get in barges that livestock can go onto. This is the traditional way of doing it.”

“You always make sure that you have a few that have done in before within the group. They will lead the pack so to speak and the rest will follow.”
