Livestock Marts: A review of sheep prices this week

In this news article, That’s Farming gets the low-down on sheep prices in Aurivo Ballinrobe Mart and Carnew Mart.

Aurivo Ballinrobe Mart

According to Aurivo Ballinrobe Mart’s assistant manager, Teresa Gibsey, prices for ewes with lambs at foot ranged from €110 to €220 for two lots of ewes with lambs at foot, on Thursday, June 8th, 2023.

Spring lambs changed hands from €2.55 to €3.45/kg or €74 to €170 with sample prices as follows:

  • 56kg, €170, €3.04/kg;
  • 52kg, €167, €3.21/kg;
  • 48kg, €162, €3.38/kg;
  • 44kg, €150, €3.41/kg.

Lambs and hoggets went under the hammer from €2.27/kg to €2.88/kg with an average of €2.58/kg.

The average price per head was approximately €120, with a top price of €157 for 62kg hoggets making €2.53/kg.

Other prices from the day, as follows –

  • 65kg hoggets, €148, €2.28/kg;
  • 48kg mixed hoggets, €138, €2.88/kg;
  • 39kg ram lambs, €112, €2.87/kg.

Cull ewes traded from €80 to €170 per head with an average of €134 paid per head.

Carnew Mart

Meanwhile, trade was “on fire” in Carnew Mart on Thursday, June 8th, 2023, according to its manager, David Quinn.

Thursday saw a large entry of sheep for “the time of year”, with 1700 head on offer.
He commented that “fat lambs and ewes were eagerly sought-after by factory agents, butchers, and northern buyers alike, leading to a full clearance on the day.

Spring lambs reached a top price of €197, while heavy ewes sold to a top call of €247.

Store ewes made from €110 to €130 for feeder types and prices varied from €150 to €180 for fleshy ewes.

The first of the store lambs, Quinn reported to www.thatsfarming.com, are “starting to appear” with lambs between 35 and 40kg selling for €100- €115 with the weight.

Spring lambs:

  • 61kg €197;
  • 49kg €186;
  • 49kg €183;
  • 43kg €173;
  • 41kg €155.

Ewes:

  • 96kg – €220;
  • 94kg – €204;
  • 98kg – €201.

Store lambs:

  • 36kg €136;
  • 38kg €150;
  • 40kg €157.

Ewes with lambs at foot

Young ewes with twins sold from €210 to €255, while aged ewes with twins made from €170 to €215.

Meanwhile, young ewes with singles pushed from €170 to €210, while aged mountain ewes with a little over a lamb a piece came in at prices from €115 to €162.
