According to a spokesperson, trade was “positive” at Ennis Mart’s sheep sale on Monday, June 12th, 2023, which saw over 700 lots come under the hammer.
They noted that a high of €189 was achieved for a pen of 10 at 54.5kgs.
They reported: “Some very good lambs were available, and Ramadan was a great benefit.”
“Some very good cull ewes were available also. These were just about holding the trade for the better lots.”
“A cull ewe of 108kgs hit €210 with a few lots in the €190 bracket,” he remarked.

- 7 @ 49.5kgs – €186 – €3.76/kg;
- 5 @ 47kgs – €175 – €3.74/kg;
- 11 @ 43kgs – €164 – €3.81/kg;

- 5 @ 41.5kgs – €165 – €3.97/kg;
- 10 @ 49.5kgs – €181 – €3.65/kg;
- 12 @ 47kgs – €172 – €3.66/kg;

Kilkenny Mart
According to George Candler, a bigger sale than usual of some 900 lots crossed the scales at Kilkenny Mart’s sheep sale on Monday, June 12th, 2023.
The mart auctioneer’s reported that the trade was aided by the presence of exporters, sourcing ram lambs to meet demand for the upcoming Muslim festival.
Candler remarked “As the old saying goes, it is the live trade (exports) that keeps the dead trade alive”.
Butcher lambs topped out at €190/head, while factory lambs followed at €169/head and cast ewes maxed out at €205/head.
Factory lambs – €3.45-€3.55/kg or €138-€169/head:
- 16 47kgs – €169;
- 10 46kgs – €162;
- 26 45kgs – €160;
- 16 44kgs – €160;
- 8 43kgs – €156;
- 18 41kgs – €150.
Butcher lambs – €3.15-€3.60/kg or €165-€190/head:
- 5 60kgs – €190;
- 10 54kgs – €182;
- 10 53kgs – €188;
- 13 52kgs – €187;
- 8 51kgs – €177;
- 13 50kgs – €180.
