79th annual Kildysart Agricultural Show takes place on Saturday

In this news article, Sinéad Finn of Kildysart Agricultural Show Society previews this year’s 79th annual event.

Kildysart Agricultural Show takes place this Saturday, August 5th, 2023, on grounds by the kind permission of the Cleary, Finn, and McMahon families.

All field activities take place in the picturesque village of Kildysart overlooking the River Shannon.

Our indoor section in our local community centre boasts a variety of arts, crafts, horticulture, floral displays, and many home-baking delights.

With over a thousand entries on display this Saturday, a visit to the exhibition hall is always a feast for the senses.

Our showjumping commences at 9.30 am in Arena One with the SJI Summer Series with the coveted Peadar Clancy Memorial trophy up for grabs and our long-standing Shannonside competition in arena two.

Highlights of the day in the horse-showing arenas are The Champion of Champions Young Horses and the All-Ireland 2-year-old filly with numerous classes for donkeys, mares, and foals.

Our wide range of cattle, sheep and goat classes overlook the Shannon estuary with wonderful exhibits on display.

In the cattle section, the Cahercon Cup, De Courcy Cup, Martin O’ Neill Cup, JJ Kelly (Ballylean) Memorial Cup, Tom Lillis (Shragh) Memorial Cup, the late Bernard O’Halloran Cup and Patrick McNamara Memorial Cup Commercial Champion of the Show are all up for grabs.

The cattle rings will play host to the Breeder’s Choice Traditional 4 or 5-Star Breeding Heifer class, sponsored by the Department of Agriculture, Food and the Marine, along with categories for Belgian Blues, Shorthorns,  Hereford, Limousin and Charolais, among others.

In the sheep section, we have prizes for non-pedigree and pedigree ewes, lambs, and the best young handler in sheep classes, while we have a best pair of goats section.

To make it a full family day out, why not enter your precious pooch in our dog show which commences at 2 pm with entries taken on the day?

Finally, we have a fantastic vintage display, bar and hospitality facilities with entertainment provided by the wonderful Patsy Downes to finish off the day, making Kildysart Agricultural Show simply the ‘Best in the West’.
