Man arrested after Gardaí find over €590,000 worth of cannabis in sheds

Gardaí have arrested one man (20s) and seized approximately €592,000 worth of suspected cannabis herb in Frenchpark, Co Roscommon.

It conducted a search operation in the village earlier today (Wednesday, June 16th, 2021).

In a statement, a spokesperson said:

“As part of an intelligence-led operation, Gardaí obtained a search warrant for a residence in Frenchpark.”

“The search was conducted at 3.30 pm by the Roscommon and Longford Divisional Drugs Unit.”

“During the course of the search, a sophisticated grow house was discovered in the residence and external sheds on the property.”

“A total of 139 cannabis plants of varying maturity were seized, with an estimated street value of €112,000. Approximately 22.5kg of vacuum-packed cannabis herb was also seized with an estimated street value of €480,000. All drugs will now be sent for analysis.”

“The man, aged in his 20s, is currently detained in Castlerea Garda Station under Section 2 of the Criminal Justice (Drug Trafficking) Act, 1996. Investigations are ongoing.”

An Garda Síochána’s website states that it is an offence to cultivate, import, export, produce, supply and possess cannabis except in accordance with a ministerial licence.

It adds that policy to date has not permitted the cultivation of cannabis for medical purposes. Furthermore, no licences have been issued for this activity.

Collision involving tractor and motorcycle

Meanwhile, Gardaí in Cork are continuing to investigate a collision involving a motorcycle and tractor in Co Cork.

The incident occurred just outside Ballineen on Tuesday, June 15th, 2021.

Confirming the news to That’s Farming, a spokesperson for An Garda Síochána said:

“Gardaí are investigating a serious road traffic collision, involving a motorcycle and a tractor, that occurred on the Bandon to Bantry Road (R568) just outside of Ballineen on 15/06/2021 at approximately 4.30 pm.”

“The motorcyclist, a male, has been taken to Cork University Hospital. His condition is described as serious.”

“The scene remains closed for a technical examination.  Investigations are ongoing. No further information is available at this time,” the spokesperson concluded.
