Ballinrobe: ‘Exceptionally lively’ trade at special bullock sale with highs of €2,300

Farming News/Mart Reports on That’s Farming – Cattle Prices – 06-09-2023

According to Teresa Gibsey of Aurivo Ballinrobe Mart, Co Mayo, an “exceptionally lively” trade prevailed for the start-of-the-month continental bullock sale on Wednesday, September 6th, 2023.

The mart’s assistant manager reported that bullocks ranged from €610 to €2,300 per head or €1.77 to €3.62 per kg, with a 97% clearance in this ring.

The average for bullocks 500kg plus was €2.77/kg up from €2.51 in September 2022, while lighter bullocks, 400 to 500 kgs, saw an average of €2.60/kg.

Sample prices on the day as follows:

  • CHX – 875KG – €2,300 – €2.63/KG;
  • CHX – 695KG – €1,940 – €2.79/KG;
  • CHX – 470KG – €1,700 – €3.62/KG;
  • CHX – 480KG – €1,710 – €3.56/KG;
  • LMX – 378KG – €1,290 – €3.41/KG.

Heifers

There was a “good” clearance in the heifer section with prices from €690 to €1,430 per head or €1.89 to €3.30 per kg.

The average for heifers 400kg to 500kg was €2.67/kg and entries 300kg to 400kg levelled at €2.62/kg.

Sample prices:

  • AAX – 607KG – €1,430 – €2.36/KG;
  • CHX – 505KG – €1,400 – €2.77/KG;
  • CHX – 425KG – €1,310 – €3.08/KG;
  • CHX – 380KG – €1,150 – €3.03/KG;
  • LMX – 300KG – €990 – €3.30/KG;
  • CHX – 335KG – €1,000 – €2.99/KG.

Dry cow prices

This week, the average for dry cows was €1485 per head with a range of €1,020 to €1,970.

Top of the town was a CHX cow, weighing 855kg and making €2.30/kg.

Sheep sale on 07-09-2023

Gibsey reported that sheep numbers are “still holding” strong for the season with over 1,800 on offer, including 1750 lambs and 150 culls.

Lambs stood from €1.00 to €3.46/kg or €40 to €161 with an average of €92 per head or €2.59/kg and a 98% clearance of lots.

Lamb prices on the day as follows:

  • 49kg, €161, €3.29/kg.
  • 50kg, €148, €2.96/kg.
  • 44kg, €146, €3.32/kg.
  • 5kg, €140, €3.01/kg.
  • 44kg, €140, €3.18/kg.
  • 37kg, €128, €3.46/kg.
  • 36kg, €123, €3.42/kg.

Cull ewes changed hands from €20 to €170 per head with an average of €75 paid per head or price per kilo €1.27 avg.

Culls:

  • 90kg, €170, €1.89/kg;
  • 88kg, €154, €1.75/kg;
  • 83kg, €150, €1.81/kg.

Sale on 08-09-2023:

The general breeding sale had a “nice” entry, which attracted buyers nationwide.

According to Gibsey, “top-quality” hoggets were on offer and prices ranged from €60 to a top of €230.

There was an average of €165 across the board for all hoggets, while the top 15 pens of hoggets levelled at €210.
