Gibsey: Numbers rising in Ballinrobe weekly with 3-day sales

Farming News/Mart Reports on That’s Farming – Aurivo Ballinrobe Mart Report – Cattle Sale – 30-08-2023

According to Aurivo Ballinrobe Mart’s assistant manager, Teresa Gibsey, bullocks topped at €1,770, while heifers hit €1,670 and cull cows peaked at €2,240 at Wednesday’s (August 30^th, 2023), sale.

Prices ranged from €700 to €1,770 per head or €1.88 to €3.08 per kg.

The average for bullocks 500kg plus was €2.54/kg, while lighter bullocks 400 to 500 kgs sold for an average of €2.42/kg.

Top prices on the day were:

• BBX – 665KG – €1,770 – €2.66/KG;
• CHX – 502KG – €1,550 – €3.08/KG;
• CHX – 485KG – €1,510 – €3.11/KG;
• CHX – 380KG – €1,230 – €3.25/KG;
• LMX – 390KG – €1,210 – €3.10/KG.

Heifers

Heifer prices varied from €720 to €1,670 per head or €1.76 to €3.06 per kg. The average for heifers 500kg plus was €2.57/kg & lots in the 400 to 500kg weight bracket levelled at €2.50/kg.

Top prices on the day were:

• CHX – 635KG – €1,670 – €2.63/KG;
• CHX – 605KG – €1,650 – €2.73/KG;
• CHX – 530KG – €1,490 – €2.81/KG;
• CHX – 415KG – €1,210 – €2.92/KG;
• BBX – 390KG – €1,090 – €2.79/KG;
• LMX – 283KG – €910 – €3.22/KG.

Cull cows

Gibsey reported that this this week, the average for dry cows was €1465 per head as prices ranged from €550 to €2,240 with the best price going to a LMX from Tawnagh, Srah, weighing in at 840kg and making €2.67/kg.

Springers

Springers ranged from €1080 to €1,900 for a CHX cow with a LMX May-born bull calf at foot, scanned 3 months back in-calf.

Sheep sale – 31-08-2023

According to Gibsey, sheep numbers continue to climb on Thursdays.

Lambs made from €1.18 to €3.50/kg or €40 to €160 with an average of €93 per head or €2.60/kg.

Lamb prices on the day:

• 57kg, €160, €2.81/kg;
• 44kg, €154, €3.50/kg;
• 45kg, €151, €3.36/kg;
• 43kg, €141, €3.28/kg;
• 44kg, €140, €3.18/kg;
• 41kg, €133, €3.24/kg;
• 42kg, €130, €3.10/kg.

Cull ewes made from €25 to €176 per head with an average of €72 paid per head or price per kilo of €1.27 avg.

Culls:

• 95kg, €176, €1.85/kg;
• 81kg, €138, €1.70/kg;
• 78kg, €120, €1.54/kg.

The general breeding sale had a large entry with buyers nationwide with “top-quality” hoggets on offer.

Prices ranged from €70 to a top of €265, while the Mayo-based mart recorded an average of €170 for all hoggets.

Good quality hoggets averaged €195, while 2^nd/3^rd crop breeders ranged from €58 to €156 with an average price of €95 per lot.
